UFC® 92: THE ULTIMATE 2008 lived up to its namesake ... and then some this past Saturday night, live from Las Vegas, Nevada. With the most talent stacked fight card in UFC® history featuring a virtual who's who of marquee UFC® fighters, each of the five main card fights featured some major fireworks, much to the delight of the packed house at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and the countless fans tuning in via Pay-Per-View.
Kicking off the night was a heavyweight tilt that saw Mostapha Al Turk make his UFC® debut against the heavily muscled Cheick Kongo. After both fighters traded low knee blows, which resulted in temporary stoppages, Kongo landed a series of vicious strikes, which eventually led to a referee stoppage and a TKO win for him at 4:37 of the opening round. This win for Kongo, the 23rd of his career, puts him in the upper echelon of UFC® heavyweights; look for him to be in the title mix sometime in the latter part of 2009.

The second fight of the night featured the rematch to a rematch when Quinton "Rampage" Jackson squared off against Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva for the third time. Seeking revenge for two previous vicious losses to Silva, "Rampage" got just that when he knocked out "The Axe Murderer" at 3:21 of the first round with a devastating left hook that hit square on Silva's jaw, which sent him reeling to the canvas unconscious. Rampage's performance on this night proves that indeed, the "wolf" is back, something that evidently Chuck Liddell knows as well, as he was seen shaking his head in the audience after the result went down.

In the third fight of the night, The Ultimate Fighter™ middleweight alum CB Dolloway returned to his winning ways with a win over Mike Massenzio. After fighting through a Massenzio guillotine choke, Dolloway regained his composure and went on to ground and pound his way to a victory at 3:01 of the first round, earning the 9th win of his career against only two defeats.

The co-main event for UFC® 92: THE ULTIMATE 2008 featured Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira against Frank Mir in a match for the UFC® Interim Heavyweight Championship. In a surprising move, Mir, a submission specialist, came out striking and used some pinpoint left hooks for the win in this one, which came at 1:54 of the second round. Of note from this match is the fact that this was the first time in his illustrious career that the Brazilian born MMA legend Nogueira has lost a fight via referee stoppage. Still the only man ever to hold both a PRIDE® title and a UFC® title, Nogueira is considered by many to be one of the greatest MMA fighters of all-time; something he plans on further cementing in 2009 by coming back "stronger" and "better" to reclaim his title.

In the main event of the night, a new UFC® Light Heavyweight champion was crowned when Rashad "Sugar" Evans stopped perennial fan favorite and true grit warrior Forrest Griffin. After having success with both leg kicks and hand strikes for the better part of two rounds, a slight tactical error on Forrest's part left the door open for Rashad to enter, which he did, ultimately winning the match via a referee stoppage from hand strikes at 2:46 of the third round. Ever confident, Forrest commented post-fight that he is "fine" and will be "back," something he has proved time and time again in his already story book career. Look for Griffin to return to the Octagon® with a new red fire in his eyes in 2009 en route to working his way back to a title shot.

All in all, UFC® 92: THE ULTIMATE 2008 put a book-end to the 2009 MMA season in true highlight reel fashion; a season which was by far the most exciting on record. Look for 2009 to be even better!
