Yohimbe is an herb made from the inner bark of the yohimbe tree, which grows wild throughout Africa. For many centuries, it has been used as a natural aphrodisiac, stimulant and tonic. Double-blind, placebo-contolled research has proven the folk wisdom: Yohimbe bark indeed improves libido and sexual performance by affecting both the male and female reproductive, nervous, circulatory and respiratory systems. Yohimbe does this through its active ingredient, yohimbine, an alkaloid monoamine oxidase inhibitor (or MAO,) that lowers blood pressure while producing blood vessel engorgement in the pelvic area and therefore stimulating the lower center of the spinal cord. This stimulation can cause a strong aphrodisiac effect.

Yohimbe also may elevate mood and reduce depression, another plus for sexual pleasure. (Or maybe the sexual pleasure elevates mood and reduces depression - who cares as long as it works?)

Yohimbe also shows the ability to aid in weight loss by suppressing the body's ability to store fat. Some bodybuilders feel that it's also an ergonogenic - an energy-booster - that allows them to work out harder and longer. Part of that effect may be caused by yohimbe's stimulant properties; some of that may be a placebo effect, as people naturally assume any aphrodisiac must raise testosterone levels (yohimbe doesn't, it increases circulation.)

For most people, using yohimbe is very safe, if taken in proper dosages. Sweating and mild nausea are short-term potential side effects. However, since yohimbine is an MAO inhibitor, like that used in some powerful tranquilizers, antidepressants and blood-pressure medications, people already taking such medicines should refrain from using yohimbe as well. Caution should be used when mixing any MAO inhibitor with alcohol. Persons with a history of psychoses should also avoid Yohimbe.
